PATRICK COUNTY VIRGINIA IN THE CIVIL WAR

Patrick County Virginia produced money during the war. This is a one dollar note.

While acquiring materials for The Free State Of Patrick: Patrick County Virginia In The Civil War one story still amazes me. You often hear of the proverbial box in the attic well I was privileged to get access to the letters of Jehu Barnard preserved by his daughter Lois Harris. Both are shown below. Lois was still teaching at Blue Ridge High School when my father came to Patrick County in 1959. She transcribed and protected her father's letters from the war. This webpage is dedicated to her for preserving an important part of Patrick County history.

If not for J. E. B. Stuart the most famous soldier from The War Between The States would be Rufus James Woolwine of the 51st Virginia Infantry. Woolwine kept a diary that the Virginia Historical Society published in their Virginia Magazine of History and Biography in 1963, Volume 71 pp. 416-448.

Woolwine's papers are in the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond donated in 1960 by Mrs. Claude Norris of Stuart, Virginia. Visit their website for more information. http://www.vahistorical.org/

Rufus Woolwine and many of the 51st Virginia Infantry were captured and sent to Fort Delaware prison on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River. Today shown below it is a state park in Delaware. http://www.visitthefort.com/

In July 1913 the 50th commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg was held. Virginia born President Thomas Woodrow Wilson spoke that day. On the platform with were two veterans of the war one from the north and one from the south, William Dennis Via of the 51st Virginia Infantry, a postwar dentist of Patrick County and messmate of Rufus James Woolwine. This is the New York newspaper from July 1913 that show Via with President Wilson at Gettysburg.
