J. E. B. STUART'S BIRTHPLACE
THE HISTORY OF THE LAUREL HILL FARM
“The Stuart Birthplace is the most important historic project ever undertaken in Patrick County.”
--Dr. James I. Robertson of Virginia Tech
After twenty years of research, this 250 page book tells the story of J. E. B. Stuart's maternal and paternal families journey to Laurel Hill, the 1500 acre Patrick County farm, where Stuart was born on February 6, 1833, to Archibald and Elizabeth Letcher Pannill Stuart. It tells the story of the Laurel Hill Farm from prehistoric times up through 2006 and the efforts to preserve the property as the only site in the nation specifically preserved to remember J. E. B. Stuart and his role in our nation's history.

What Others Are Saying About The Free State of Patrick
"The Civil War laid a heavy hand even on counties far
removed from the vortex of major military action. This history of Patrick
County, Virginia, offers an array of primary materials, recapturing the voices
of people who experienced seismic changes in their lives. It should appeal to a
wide range of readers interested in the Civil War."
--Gary W.
Gallagher
John L. Nau III Professor of History, University of
Virginia
“Tom Perry's history of his beloved home county is
chock full of original Civil War material available nowhere else. Hard work that
amasses that kind of primary evidence about the war is amazingly uncommon in the
field, and deserves the most enthusiastic kind of applause. I heartily commend
the book to students interested in the war, as seen through the eyes of its
contemporaries.”
--Robert K. Krick
Retired National Park
Service Historian at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park
"Wonderfully written, superbly researched. A book that
is a tribute to the men and women of Patrick County. The research is
richly written in a narrative that is a pleasure to read. The letters of
the men and women of Patrick County show their heart and soul during a tragic
time. This book is a vital history. Because of Tom Perry’s time and work,
the men and women of Patrick will not be forgotten but will live again through
this book. Every county of Virginia deserves to have a similar written tribute.
"
--Patricia Walenista
Founder of the Turner Ashby Historical
Society
“Growing up in Patrick County, the Civil War was The
War--it needed no other adjectives. The War's terrible imprint is visible on
dozens of grave markers across Patrick's rolling hills. The story of this little
corner of Virginia is so profound because it is repeated throughout the South,
over and over and over. Perry's book brings this point home plainly and
poignantly. From her most illustrious son, JEB Stuart, to common farmers and
housewives, Thomas Perry has told a compelling story of one community ravaged by
war. An invaluable tool for future scholars.”
--Debra and Thomas
Goodrich,
Authors of The Day Dixie Died
“Thomas David Perry's "The Civil War in Patrick
County" is a prodigious research effort that fills a historical void in the
county's history. The work documents the county's military and social history of
the period and does so with balance and fairness. Scattered throughout the
weighty research are anecdotal gems that lighten the reader’s way. Any future
work on Patrick County's role in the Civil War will begin where Perry leaves
off.”
--Rodney Barfield - Author of Seasoned By Salt: An
Historical Album of the Outer Banks; Thomas Day, Cabinetmaker; and Christopher
Bechtler: Mint Master of Pioneer Gold.
“I completely enjoyed this. It is well written, smart,
organized, moving and precisely researched. I know what it took to turn this
out. Every citizen of this county is indebted to you.”
--The Honorable Martin
F. Clark, Jr.
Author of The Many Aspects of Mobile Home
Living.
“This book is a must for Civil War and history
enthusiasts. The personal stories of Patrick Countians in the Civil War are
touching and emotional, especially for the families represented.”
--Patricia
Ross,
Director, Bassett Historical Center
“I salute Tom Perry’s work. He has done so much
to preserve the history of Patrick County, and now he has researched and written
an enjoyable and comprehensive account of its wartime trials and tribulations.
It’s a needed, solid contribution to Civil War and Virginia history.”
--Christopher J.
Hartley, Author of Stuart’s Tarheels: James B. Gordon and the First North
Carolina Cavalry.
" A wonderful book! An
excellent source of information and a must-have book for anyone wishing to
research Patrick County's role in the War between the States. The most
comprehensive book of it's kind about Patrick County and the soldiers that
fought from that county."
--Chris Washburn,
Wharton-Stuart Camp #1832, Sons of Confederate
Veterans.
